ABOUT BRITISH COLUMBIA JADE

British Columbia Jade is a Nephrite Jade.  It is a silicate of calcium and magnesium.  Historically, Jade is a stone revered by the Chinese for more the 5,000 years.  Very tough, this stone revered by the Chinese for more than 5,000 years. Very tough, this stone has been discovered to have been used by prehistoric tribes for tools, weapons and utensils. Colors of Nephrite Jade ranges from pure white to all shades of green.

Mining of Jade involves drilling into the mountain side with water cooled diamond tipped core drills.  The cores are then extracted and examined to determine grade and suitability to a finished product.

Working a Jade lens at the Polar Mine

After this very selective process, the miner analyzes the "face" for cleavage points where it will be possible to remove the jade.  After more drilling to push the jade apart from its natural state, heavy machinery hauls the gemstone off of the mountainous site.

Due to the toughness of Jade the above mentioned process is a difficult one.  Also complicating the breaking out process is the fact that Jade is composed of tightly interlocking fibers (like a handful of human hair).  These fibers make processing jade far more difficult than any other gemstone.

The large boulders of Jade are then taken to huge diamond saws where they are reduced to even more manageable sizes.  Trimming Jade boulders reveals windows into the interior of the boulder to expose the beauty of the Jade within.  These pieces are taken to warehouses to await even more refinishing and to finally become a beautiful one-of-a-kind work of art.

Our finishing factory, Hong Kong Precious Stone Art Factory, is in the Shunde Dalian District-Daliang, Shunde, Guandong China.  Our team of artisans work with one of a kind pieces to completion by one individual artisan from start to finish.  All carvings are signed by the artisan upon completion of the project.
